Written by Katie upon initiation into AEMB:

I have managed to do a wide variety of things during my time at Arizona State University. In addition to maintaining high grades in biomedical engineering and pursuing a Spanish minor, I have been involved in the Biomedical Engineering Society, being an officer for the past four years (Events Coordinator, Historian, Industry Representative, and President). I also go on many adventures with the ASU Outdoors Club, including climbing, canyoneering, hiking, backpacking, biking, caving, etc. I manage to squeeze in some snowboarding and wakeboarding as well. I occasionally do things with the Running Club, Saint Paul’s Outreach, and the Society of Women Engineers, in addition to serving as a lector at the ASU All Saints Catholic Newman Center. On top of all of these extracurriculars and a little bit of volunteer work, I also have three jobs. I am an undergraduate teaching assistant for the BME 382 class on prototyping, tutor for InstaEDU, and do research in Dr. LaBelle’s lab through the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative. I also represent FURI as a FURI Fellow. I have had the opportunity to present my research at three conferences: the Piper Health Solutions Workshop on Rehabilitation Robotics, MEPTEC Medical Technology Conference, and BMES Annual Meeting 2013. However, my research experience is not limited to Dr. LaBelle’s lab. I have also been able to participate in the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network Research Experience for Undergraduates during the summer of 2013, and worked as an R&D Intern for Bard Peripheral Vascular during the summer of 2014.

I will be graduating in May 2014 with my bachelor’s degree, but my career at ASU will not end there. I am enrolled in the 4+1 program for biomedical engineering. After earning my masters degree from ASU, I intend to obtain a job as an R&D engineer for a medical device company, so that I can design new and improve old devices to better the lives of people all over the world.
